The need for a local leisure centre in Edmondson Park becomes even more evident, alleviating these struggles and providing an equal opportunity for families without cars.

There is a wide variety of opportunities that Local leisure centres bring to the community that primarily benefits children within the community. Children can develop and build on their socialisation skills, learn to share spaces with others, have the opportunity to play with other children and create fun games, like mermaids or Marco Polo, and have an opportunity to develop communication skills creating lasting friendships and memories.

Australia is a water country surrounded by an array of beaches, rivers and swimming pools. It is a life-saving skill to know how to swim in this country. Learning to swim enables children to have the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate water environments which are often silently risky. An aquatic centre within the community allows families to send their children to learn and develop this essential skill.

Local leisure centres can foster a child’s interest in water activities by offering programs to learn and to join aquatic clubs where they can socialise with their peers and grow an appreciation for water. It also boosts the child’s confidence in water-based activities, reducing the risk of accidents in the future. Swimming proficiency allows children to participate in school water sports and swimming carnivals and enjoy beach outings safely with friends and families. These recreational activities play a role in a child’s physical, emotional and social well-being, improving them immensely.

Schools often spend a lot on organising events such as swimming carnivals, one of the most popular and fun days of the year in High school. Schools can participate in these events with a local centre, creating a more inclusive day for students to attend, as it is nearby the cost is not as nearly as high.

Swimming carnivals are one of those events that foster friendly competition and instil a sense of school spirit amongst students and staff. These events allow students to showcase their abilities, develop sportsmanship and bond with classmates outside the classroom. Having a leisure centre reduces travel time and associated costs, such as hiring transportation while promoting students’ bonding opportunities, which contributes to the event’s success.

So, this is a call for the Liverpool council to realise the potential and benefits of an aquatic centre in the heart of a new suburb, highlighting the importance of equity for families who are not as fortunate and an opportunity for our children to learn in an environment with important water education, opportunities to socialise and participate in sports. Installing an aquatic centre is a great initiative to benefit the community immensely.
