A Place of Rest in Overwhelm

This weird time before we have results is formless. This is the time for looking into what you want to create. How are we going to move forward? As a country? As a people? As inhabitants of this one world?

I was adopted at 3 months old. Because I don’t know where I come from, I have had to work hard to define my place. I have been searching for pieces of myself my whole life. Because of this, I am constantly trying things on. I am also constantly putting things aside. I am learning how to see me and how to trust me. My dad used to ask me if I was done staring at my navel. Nope. I never will be.

Hannah Gadsby called Americans “culturally confident.” Confidence is not a word I wear easily. And this split down the middle of our country shows that our confidence crumbled a while back. We have gotten entrenched in our own ideas and ways of seeing and won’t see other possibilities. We have lost our place. We have lost what we do well.

It’s time to create something, not more of not that. We are going to have to work hard to define our place so this country can become a true democracy. We have to try things on. We have to put things aside. It’s going to be uncomfortable. It already is. We do need to learn to see each other, to trust each other. And that means going inside and being responsible for what you create. I’m not going to ask you if you are done staring at your navel because that work is never done. Nor is the evolution of the USA. I look forward to wearing my confidence about the growth of this country and it’s place in this one world. For now, I stand in possibility.
