Five Methods to Grow Your Side Business While Commuting

Prior to leaving my 9-to-5 job six years ago, I dreaded the daily 45-minute trip to work. I would become upset when I considered about the things I might be doing for my business instead of waiting in traffic.

What I did not understand at the time was that your morning and evening commutes may be EXTREMELY important time for building your own business and escaping the corporate environment permanently. In fact, that time in the car may be the only time you have alone with few distractions for the most of the day (emails, Facebook, Twitter, co-workers, family, friends, etc).

As an entrepreneur running a side business, you must develop time management skills very quickly. It is crucial to utilize your everyday commute to and from your 9-to-5 work. Instead of listening to your favorite music or repeating your last argument with your partner or boss, you want to utilize that time to learn new things and increase your knowledge.

The reality is that businesses are founded on IDEAS, not only labor. Growing your business does not necessarily involve a computer, a networking event, or a sales pitch. When you broaden your thinking, nurture new ideas, obtain new views, or acquire new abilities, you ARE growing your business because you are growing as an individual and a leader. In other words, you are accumulating “human capital” that will benefit you for the remainder of your life, regardless of the business or project you pursue.

There are countless amazing (and some life-altering) business books available on the market. I often wish I could absorb their expertise through osmosis and utilize it to propel my business to new heights. However, listening to the audiobook version is quite similar. Check out Audible for the most recent and best business books that you can quickly listen to on your iPod or other audio device.
