How Playing Games Have Taught Me A Lot About Patience

Sometimes you just have to be patient and keep going before you win the game

Ever since I started working over 13 years ago, I realized that my patience wears thin really quickly compared to when I was younger. I get angry faster, I lose my temper and I snap at people very easily.

It’s not really a nice trait to have, especially because it adds to your stress levels.

And it also becomes somewhat of a habit down the line. I realized that ever since I started losing my patience quicker, it just got worse and worse. The smallest things would annoy me or irritate me.

I’d get really impatient at the tiniest things.

It was bad.

Then, I started doing something that I hadn’t done as much after I became a working adult — I started playing video games again.

I loved playing video games as a kid. I played a lot of games right up until university. Then I stopped. I started socializing more and forgot all about the joys of playing video games.

I started playing old games that I played when I was a kid. RPGs like Shining Force and Final Fantasy. I also started playing games on my phone. Games like Toon Blast, etc that are not too time-consuming and just for a bit of relaxation and fun.

And by playing these games, I started to re-learn how to be patient again.

How?

Because winning at these games requires a lot of it.

The RPGs that I play sometimes require me to have my characters at high levels to beat bosses and levelling up these characters take time. Sometimes, I can spend up to weeks just to level them up. The games that I play on my phone? I’ve been stuck on one level up to weeks at a time before finally being able to beat it and move up a level.

And I wouldn’t be able to do any of that if I didn’t have the patience to do so.

But by not giving up so easily and taking my time to do what’s necessary to beat the game, it has really helped in me being more patient, not just when I play games but in every other aspect of my life.

So, who said playing games is bad for you and not beneficial?

It has definitely been beneficial for me and I will continue playing games for as long as I live.
