Baselang Review

Hi my name is Carter and I am 24 years old American living in the US. I started using Baselang around the middle of March this year and am now about two months in. I already had taken some Spanish in grade school and a couple semesters in college so I had a decent base. However, after using Baselang, I have realized that the way Spanish is taught in school is not the most efficient way to learn. My goal is to be conversational within a few months and eventually be fluent so I can visit friends in South America and Spain. The ability to have a native speaker tutor you live and face-to-face is definitely one of the best and most efficient ways to learn. Not every single tutor is on the same level as some are more fluent in English and some have prior teaching experience. However, the great thing about Baselang is that there are so many tutors to choose from that it is so easy to find ones that suit your needs. I found that I needed a tutor that had solid English skills because I had tons of questions and needed comparisons to grammar or phrases English. Tutors are available for live video every day of the week through Zoom.

Baselang has plenty of resources to keep you busy from extra vocabulary specific to whatever interests you would like to be able to discuss (activities, business, love, etc.), to specific grammar lessons that English speakers frequently have difficulty with. The core lessons that are set up to be completed with a tutor are very well thought out and add in new vocabulary sporadically so that you are constantly being challenged without feeling overwhelmed. Learning the different tenses of verbs are probably the most important aspect of learning Spanish if you are an English speaker as in English we have significantly fewer tenses. Baselang has so many examples of the different verb tenses and they force you to pronounce it the correct way repeatedly so that it is drilled into your memory and becomes more natural. Irregular verbs are definitely a big problem for English speakers, and it is something you will get the hang of as you get more exposure to the verbs. You will begin to notice different patterns with verbs and also with nouns that will eventually allow you to predict if a verb is going to be irregular and if a noun is going to be similar to an English word.

There are some really great aspects to learning through the tutors. You have the control to take classes, just have a conversation, or even share your screen and use resources you have found online. This flexibility is great and well worth the monthly price if you plan to devote enough time each week. I really liked the tutors that could assess how the classes were going and suggest that we switch up the routine and just have a casual conversation. The mix of learning new grammar and vocab and then applying it in conversations is the best way to make it more natural. If you find tutors that you like you can search by their specific schedule and build a relationship with them. Almost any time of the day, tutors are available for a lesson that you can schedule days in advance or even minutes in advance.

I try to expose myself to as many Spanish resources as possible by listening to Spanish music and watching Spanish movies with subtitles. Baselang is a fantastic resource to have if you plan to live in a Spanish country and want to learn by immersion. Without using Baselang beforehand you might feel overwhelmed by the culture shock and get discouraged. It is in the name Baselang. They are trying to give you the perfect base that you need in learning a language so you can feel comfortable immersing yourself. If you don’t wish to live in a Spanish speaking country and have different goals then that is fine as well and you can control how and what you learn.

My progress over the first few weeks was the most drastic as I was relearning things I had forgotten and was rusty with. I was devoting about 2 hours a day to learning, mostly through taking classes with the tutors. I have s I am now at the point where I can have somewhat of a conversation and can understand most of what is said. I can read almost everything in Spanish and can write it significantly better. Now I am focusing one building more vocabulary and practicing speaking so that I can be quicker in my responses and understand different people better. What some people often overlook as they start learning Spanish, is that not everyone is going to speak to you with slow and perfect pronunciation as a teacher would. People will talk fast and mumble often and different countries have different speeds and accents. The more you get familiar with the most common words used and with listening to the language you will be able to understand all types of Spanish speakers much better.

What really interests me is that Spanish has so many different dialects and different countries have different phrases. For example, Spain uses vosotros and they pronounce ‘C’s with the ‘th’ sound. I went on a trip to Mexico and they have a slightly different accent and pace and also use many different words and phrases than other countries. The great thing about the tutors in Baselang is that they are mostly from Venezuela and Colombia, which I feel both have among the most proper and universal way of speaking Spanish. This is very beneficial for whichever country you would wish to travel to and speak with the locals.

My love of the Spanish culture has grown with learning the language and I have a real appreciation for how passionate they are about food, dancing, love, and music. Spanish music is so expressive and something that definitely differs from the majority of English music. My grandfather was from San Sebastian, Spain and now it is definitely on my bucket list to visit. Opening yourself up to learning a different language is a great mental exercise and it also opens you up to new ways of thinking and experiencing life. Priorities change and work life balance is something that is more important to me now. I also value my relationships with my friends and family more after exposing myself to travel in Spanish countries.
