Why the Atlanta Murders were Racist

Intersectionality 101

The current news from Atlanta is showing exactly why we need an intersectional approach to understanding racism.

But that hatred, that deep misogyny that demonized those women and made those women “killable” in the eyes of the murderer, was driven by nothing but racism. In this case the fetishization of Asian women.

Without an intersectional framework, these women fall through the cracks.

When Kimberlé Crenshaw wrote about intersectionality for the first time in 1989 and the early 1990s, this was exactly her point.

If you don’t have a framework that allows you to see what Black women experience and other women of color (Crenshaw’s article “Mapping the Margins” is incredible on immigrant women), you won’t see them at all.

When we say “anti-Asian racism” we have to include the specific ways that different Asians experience racism, in terms of gender, sexuality, class, and so much else.

Or we end up believing the newspapers. And Malcolm X told us what happens when we start believing the newspapers.
