Only Viola Davis Can Sell Reparations To White Folks

I feel a little guilty about drafting one of our pristine thespian queens into this impossible political quagmire. It may even be a little irresponsible, since I don’t really know what Ms. Viola Davis thinks about reparations. But considering the fact that she grew up a poor Black girl in rural South Carolina in the 60’s, it is fairly safe to assume that the intelligent, talented, magnetic and principled queen of screens believes that Mother America owes a debt to her Black children. Most rational people do.

But all guilt and irresponsibility aside, I am doing us all a big favor because bringing Ms. Davis into anything always makes it better. In her Oscar nominated role as one of the long-suffering Black domestic servants in the 2011 hit movie The Help, Ms. Davis asked the only question that has any chance of breaking through the ice on a political issue that has been effectively frozen since the fall of 1865. That was when America reneged on the ’40 acres and a mule’ promise it had made that January to every formerly enslaved family. Think of this betrayal as the opening scene of the blockbuster sequel to the original sin of slavery.

That allotment was supposed to provide the survivors of American slavery all the resources they would ever need to be self-sufficient and economically viable as they embarked on lives of independence. With their acres and their mule to help them work it, they would not be in need of any more government support than any other group of citizens in the country.

And even though the evil Miss Hilly wasn’t tired of tormenting her maid, in my estimation, White folks by-and-large ARE tired of the burden of Americas racial sins, both historically and currently. Those who truly get off on the racial oppression and the strife it carries may be loud and…
